1972 – Mark Spitz captured the first of his seven gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. He set a world record when he completed the 200-meter butterfly in 2 minutes and 7/10ths of a second.

1926 – Gertrude Ederle became the first American woman to swim the English Channel. She was 19 years old at the time. The swim took her 14 1/2 hours.

Micheal Phelps is 7-7 in Beijing, tying Mark Spitz’s record of 7 gold medals in a single Olympics but it was close. Phelps barely squeaked out tonight’s win by .01 seconds. Just barely outreaching Milorad Cavic to win the 100 meter butterfly event. Phelps hits the water one last time Sunday to compete in the 400 meter medley where the United States are heavily favored.

I was able to catch the 400 medley last night while grabbing a post 6yr olds birthday party bite to eat. All I can say is WOW! Phelps didn’t even seem to be swimming at full speed. If he keeps this up, then he will accomplish what he has set out to do in this years games. Walk away with 8 gold medals, I’m sure glad he is on our side!! ;)
