I want you guys to pay close attention to the words on this Heisman Ballot. “As my first choice to receive the Heisman Memorial Trophy, awarded to the MOST OUTSTANDING COLLEGE PLAYER” Boy the voters really got it right this year.. *shakes head* Mark Ingram, really? You mean to tell me the voters feel he is the MOST OUTSTANDING college player this year? He isn’t even the best player on his own team. This proves to me that several voters based their decision on one game (SEC Championship Game) and that t0 many people who don’t want enough college football have a vote. Alabama fans look in the mirror and ask yourself an honest question. *If we took Mark Ingram off the Tide, would we still be undefeated*? The answer would most likely be yes. Don’t get me wrong Mark Ingram is a great player, and will be playing for someone on Sundays, but he was not the MOST OUTSTANDING player in college football this year.

Colt McCoy had a solid season this year, but his numbers were down from last year. He didn’t win the Heisman last year with better numbers, so I didn’t expect him to win this year. Nor do I feel he is the MOST OUTSTANDING player in college football this year. Tim Tebow along with Colt McCoy had great careers at the college level, but the Heisman isn’t about your body of work. Toby Gerhart, Mark Ingram, Colt McCoy, and Tim Tebow, all great players in their own right, but the voters got it wrong this year. This years Heisman should have gone to a defensive player!

Ndamukong Suh was the MOST OUTSTANDING player in college football this year. There are only two reasons he didn’t win this year in my opinion.

1. He is a defensive player, and apparently the Heisman can only be given to offensive players. Yes Charles Woodson won the award in 1997 but he played defense, offense, and was a part of special teams. He was also the ONLY primarily Defensive player to ever win the award.

2. Nebraska didn’t win the Big 12 Championship. Nebraska didn’t finish the season undefeated, they are not playing in a BCS bowl game. And I’ll go ahead and say it, Nebraska doesn’t play in the SEC.

Just a random thought but I wonder who Tim Tebow voted for this year. I’d be willing to bet his vote was cast for someone in the SEC, and it wasn’t himself. If the Heisman was a beauty contest, the voters voted for a 6 ( the girl that is cool to hang out with, somewhat attractive) when they could have voted for the 10 ( smokin hot girl that is the complete package)

And while I pissing the world off blasting the Heisman voters, and Alabama’s first Heisman winner I’ll go ahead and throw this out there as well. College football needs a playoff system. Perhaps someday the BCS and college football will remember that college football is a sport, and not a business. They claim the BCS is only designed to put the number one team and number two team together, but we all know that is a load of crap. The powers that be pick teams for the BCS bowl games based on who has the best traveling fan base. It all comes down to the all mighty dollar. How do you determine a true number one in the country without some sort of playoff system? You leave it up to the voters, and we see how well the voters did when asked to vote on a Heisman winner.

So now that the bowl games have been announced and Cincinnati, Boise State, and TCU are not in the mix for the National Championship game. Let the media and fans around the country bitch, moan, and complain. Various sports writers around the country are saying that Texas doesn’t deserve to play Alabama for the National Championship, based on last nights last minute field goal to beat Nebraska. What they failed to mention (which is no surprise) Alabama’s last minute field goal last week and Cincinnati’s come from behind win yesterday. Every team in the top 10 have had scares at one point or another this season. Mack Brown said it best last night. Had the Texas/Nebraska game been an SEC game it would have been considered a defensive battle. Since it was a Big 12 game, its being considered a below average game.

The first major upset of the college football season should have come earlier this afternoon with Navy upsetting Ol’ Sweater Vest’s Buckeyes. Instead the first major upset of the college football season comes a few hours later. #20 ranked BYU takes down #3 Oklahoma, my jaw is still on the floor. Since the Longhorns thrashing of a high school team from Louisiana was not televised I decided to check out the the Oklahoma/BYU game, just to see what the Longhorns had in store for them the third week of October. I was very surprised with a 10 – 3 score at the half. I was even more surprised that Sam Bradford (Oklahoma’s quarterback and last years Heisman trophy winner) would leave the game with a sprained shoulder. Most Longhorn fans will think this is a blessing, you know a chance Bradford will not be able to start come Red River Weekend, I say please do. I want a fully loaded Oklahoma team with Bradford to hit the field. I don’t want any excuses that weekend. BYU’s defense took advantage of a young offensive line, getting the Bradford numerous times. With 4 turnovers in the first half, and numerous STUPID penalties BYU should have been down by 35 at the half easy.

I have talked with two Sooner fans already this evening. One told me he would call me back, which he has yet to do. The other told me that she kept waiting for the Sooners to get rolling, and is still in shock that they lost. When I told her that I didn’t want to hear about had Bradford not gotten hurt it would have been different, she replied * You won’t hear that from me, because we looked horrible before he got hurt*. It’s always nice to talk to realistic rival fans, unlike completely delusional one such as Ohio State fans. I wonder of the 80,000+ fans that watched the Longhorns lay the wood to Louisiana Monroe, how many of them actually were sick to their stomachs with the Longhorn’s schedule this year? Just a reminder Texas fans, what happened tonight in Austin WAS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN. The same can be said for the defending National Champion Gators season opener. That was also SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN!

Oh football season how I have missed you!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Four days away from a toe in the ball! Week one notes to follow.

Game of the week may well be in Stillwater, OK. This is a new money / old money clash. Oklahoma State coach, Mike Gundy (now 42 and still a man) take the field against SEC power Georgia in an afternoon ABC game. Oklahoma State seems to be the darling of all the pick ‘em experts AND Vegas. I’m going against the grain on this one. Take the Dawgs and the 6 points.

Can we all just agree that Oregon needs to beat Boise St on Thursday night? They play nobody the rest of the year. Nobody. The Broncos win this one and they stroll to the BCS and knock out a spot for a team from a real conference that has played someone.

Check out Penn State’s schedule. I’m not linking it. Look it up, lazy. Can’t something be done? They play nobody. Again, nobody!

Oklahoma vs. BYU in Dallas should be a good one. I don’t know the over/under. If it is below 700, I say take the over in this one and count your money.

Okay, sports fans, what’s wrong with this poll? I mean, there’s a lot to scrutinize, that’s for sure. Florida is obviously still riding the wave they caught last year by winning the BCS Championship game. Texas would have loved to have played them, but they didn’t, so don’t sweat the number 2 ranking. Pete Carroll is probably sitting in some booster paid-for recruit’s den, whining about being below the Okies, but number 4 isn’t a bad place to start. And Ole Miss at number 8? Riiiight. That’ll last a long time (Sorry, Jeavon). As you go down the list, there are plenty of places to stop and scratch your head, but the biggest surprise of all is the omission of the Cabbage Patch Kids from the plains of Lubbock, Texas. Obviously, nobody talked to the Cabbage Patch Coach about his team. You know, the one which scores huge numbers each game. The team that sends all these great players to the pros!! I mean, the QB is so good, teams figured they couldn’t afford him, so the didn’t bother to draft him!! Why go through the contract hassle? Oh, damn, that doesn’t make sense. That only happens when you drop to 10th in the draft, but want 5th place money because that’s where you felt you should have been drafted. Al Davis paid Heyward-Bey a kings ransom at number 7, you say? So what…Al Davis has been fiscally irresponsible for years. He probably pays more than $10 for a haircut, too. Lookout for the weaker teams the Tt Red Raiders play this year. The “System” will try to score in triple digits to wipe this insult from their swashbuckling faces!! There’s a bad wind blowin’ out there on the plains of west Texas. Beware of scorned CP Kids!!

Strength Of Schedule (simply put who did you play, and how good was that team. Also Home/Away is taken into consideration)

The Longhorn 2009 schedule is a joke to say the least. I went through and did some comparisons between 2 of the powerhouses in the Big 12 being Texas and Oklahoma. I also went with Oklahoma because of the drama that came up at the end of last season for the Big 12 Championship and National Championship. Also Oklahoma is the BIGGEST game on Texas Schedule. Some would argue that Texas A&M would be the biggest game. Being the biggest rival, and biggest game are two totally different. Lets face it Oklahoma is a National Championship contender every season, and well Texas A&M haven’t been relevant since the days of R.C. Slocum. Sorry Aggie fans no offense intended, just being honest. I have broken down my comparison between schedules as such..

Kansas State (5-7) Conference

@Nebraska (9-4) Conference

@Texas A&M (4-8) Conference

Texas Tech (11-2) Conference

Oklahoma State (9-4) Conference

Oklahoma plays 3 non conference teams with winning records, where as Texas plays ZERO non conference teams with winning records. I would like to hope EVERY Texas fans keeps this in mind at the end of the season. IF there is a debate about who should go where, and the records are similar, please don’t whine and complain when Oklahoma gets the nod. Remember that 45-35 is history, and your Texas Longhorns control who they play 4 weeks of the season. They continue to schedule lesser opponents. This year as always strength of schedule is something Mack Brown and the rest of his coaching staff are clueless about. Thanks Mack!

Here’s an early round trivia question: What state is home to the best high school football in the country? Florida? Ohio? California? All also-rans after Texas. This is no contest. I’m writing this from Nashville, TN no bias here.

As with any state, there is a tug at the top. Tech and TCU have had recent success but even in a state with 10 D1 programs, there are two schools that sit atop of the heap. Texas and Texas A&M. For those of you under the age of 20, here’s a very quick recap. A&M used to go to bowl games and get recruits. Facilities? A&M is a showplace. Fan support? Longhorn home games are easier to get tickets to than a game at Kyle Field. People all over the state have maroon cars with “Aggie” stickers on the bumper. You know where you stand when recruiting in the Lone Star State when you walk up to the door of a kids house. Unless your kid is in the basement doing lab experiments after football practice he’s not Rice or SMU bound. That welcome mat in the past under the coach’s feet was usually burnt orange or maroon. So what has happened to this program? I had a conversation about this with SportsBean co-founder, JY over the weekend. He pointed to the following from NFLblogs.com/combine. He believes that it’s coaching. I asked if it was having that bowling ball of a running back, Lane on the sidelines on goal line plays? Sending this same running back around the end on short yardage plays? Beating Army in overtime? Yes. All of that. See below from the blog…

Stephen McGee.

Remember this name because he could be a real sleeper in next month’s draft:

Certainly the 17 NFL scouts and one coach who showed up at Texas A&M’s pro day will remember the quarterback and his workout. The Aggies held their pro day on Wednesday, but it actually began with meet-and-greets Tuesday night at Wings-n-More in College Station, where scouts had an opportunity to conduct personal player interviews as well as ask questions of the A&M coaching staff.

The only non-scout at the pro day was Jaguars quarterbacks coach Mike Shula, who put McGee through QB drills. And let me tell you, McGee looked outstanding.

McGee, who ran the second-fastest 40 among quarterbacks at the combine (4.66), measured 6-2 7/8 and weighed 222 pounds, down 3 from his combine weigh-in.

Watch out for this kid on draft day.

What? When did this happen? If he’s in Oklahoma, Kansas, Tech, or Texas’ backfield is he a sleeper? Probably not. A&M is broken and I don’t see a fix. Texas A&M needs to be good for the Big XII. They are were never an Oklahoma or Nebraska but the program Bear Bryant started is a shadow of what it once was. What a shame for the Big XII. With this crazed, willing to travel fan base and tradition.

A few more years of this and this state will see a permanent power shift to Austin and Lubbock and Texas A&M will be watching the rest of the conference play in bowl games every year from Buffalo Wild Wings with Baylor.

I’m not going to sit here and pretend that I fully understand how the BCS works. I understand enough to know its a severly flawed system. After watching the BCS Bowl game show Sunday, I was left asking myself only one question. How does a 10-2 Ohio State make it to yet another BCS bowl game? Does old sweater vest have some juicy dirt on a BCS computer? Or maybe one of the other powers that be?

Maybe one of the readers could explain it to me, because I just don’t get it. They did not win the Big 10 this year, and there are 9 other teams in the top 10 who have 11-1 or better records. One of them being an undefeated Boise State, who find themselves going to the Poinsettia Bowl to face #11 TCU. I just don’t understand it. Now normally when an Ohio State post is written on the Corner, it brings out all the Ohio State homers, and we get some great comments such as *What I would expect from a bunch of rednecks” ect ect ect. If your a Ohio State homer, and you feel like talking trash about how great your beloved NUT is, then let me leave you with this.

This will be the scene after the Longhorns lay the wood to you guys in the Fiesta bowl.

*EDIT* The Sports Bean was kind enough to enlighten me on why Ohio State is making a BCS Bowl game appearance after a 10-2 season. (They travel very very well. $ <— )

I say @ Florida because this years National Championship game is in Miami, and will basically be a home game for the Gators. Is it to early to start the *Go Gators* chant?? Not going to claim to be a Tim Tebow or Florida Gators fan, but even thought the Sooners are representing the Big 12 I just can’t bring myself to lend them my support. I did it once this year for the game against Texas Tech, but that was because it was for the good of my Longhorns. Taking one for the team so to speak.

The bowl games will be released later tonight. Check back for a full update later tonight. If the Cotton Bowl plays out as expected I may have to try and secure tickets again this year. Even if Mr Ol Broad will be back in Tennesee this year, I’d like to see Texas Tech and Ole Miss duke it out.
