Dez Bryant is a Dallas Cowboy

April 23rd, 2010 · 1 Comment

Holy shit, Ick’s absence has drawn the overcussing LiverDamage out of his vow of post silence.  Somebody needs to be the rational (yet vulgar) voice on this blog for the Cowboys draft pick.

You knew Dez Bryant was coming here.  It was going to happen… now we can speculate what will happen now that it has.  As I see it, there are several things that could happen here with his on the field and off the field career.

On the Field with a solid QB and above average team:

  1. Dez can be a complete bust.  I don’t think this is likely, but we’ll see.
  2. Dez can be a solid player similar to Dwayne Bowe.  Big and fast with decent production.
  3. Probowler… think Chad Johnson’s productivity.  With Dez’s skill set of size, vision and speed I feel this is the most likely prediction.
  4. Hall of Famer… I’m not even going to talk about this pipedream until he puts a couple huge seasons together.  Until then I’m going to say there is less than 1% chance.

Now the fun, what kind of disease is he?  He is a kid that has been suspended for most of last season.  OSU coaches weren’t crying about his departure.  He has arrived late for games and practices.  He is friends with Deion Sanders.  He doesn’t seem to bright (just an observation, although I honestly have nothing more than a gut feeling to go on).  He claims (and I’ll take it as truth) that he doesn’t drink or do drugs.  He is going to be playing under a puppet head coach with a cupcake discipline system.

Off the Field disease factor:

  1. Over the top celebrations.  I expect this, and honestly don’t care.
  2. Inflated sense of self worth.  Any pro athlete is always this way, especially wideouts… take your exceptions and shove them up your ass.
  3. The holdout money man.  I don’t expect Jerry to allow this to happen but he will want to get paid.
  4. The cancer (T.O. factor) – a possibility, I’m not going to lie… it worries me.
  5. The druggy, DWI driver, suspension regular.  I do not think this likely.

So, with a #24 pick, you have what looks to be an NFL Probowl wideout.  Huge upside on the field with low downside potential with a small investment of a late round first pick.

My verdict to the Cowboys fans: 2 thumbs up on taking the chance… now we’ll see how it turns out.  Don’t expect too much his 1st season though.
