A Much Needed Break…

December 12th, 2009 · 4 Comments

TigerWoods

Well its official Tiger Woods will be taking a break from golf to get his train wreck of a life sorted out.  Gatorade cut ties with Tiger earlier in the week, saying the decision to discontinue the *Tiger Focus* came months ago. Yeah right! Now I will say this, the Focus series tasted horrible.  I still continue to hear callers to the local sports talk radio stations claiming Tiger owes everyone details, and an explanation. Once again Tiger owes you nothing!  With Tiger taking a break from golf, the golfing world will once again be reminded why Tiger is golf.  Its a proven fact that when Tiger doesn’t play, ratings tank.  All these golfers that have come out with comments about the Tiger situation should refrain from making comments, and instead be thanking Tiger for helping them make millions.  When people talk about what players like Jordan, and Gretzky have done for their chosen sport, Tiger should be included in these discussions.  Tiger Woods made golf  relevant to a younger generation. He also brought the multi- million dollar endorsements deals to the sport.

Despite what fans think about Tiger right now, when he returns from his break they will be tuned in to watch.  Whether it be to see how he is playing after the break, to cheer for epic failure, or to see him with another tournament.  Whatever your reason, the point is you tuned in and ratings will soar through the roof.  Golf and the companies involved win. Once again whether fans or golf want to admit it, golf needs Tiger!  At this point in Tigers career, golf needs him more, then he needs golf.  All major sports need their superstars to not only sell the sport, but the products that go along with it.

As I said in an earlier post the train wreck that has become Tiger Woods life will pass.  Fans have a short and in some cases selective memory when it comes to their athletes.

*Edit* For the record I am not a Tiger Woods fan, or a fan of the sport.  I am not defending Tiger Woods actions, I am merely stating the facts from an objective point of view.

Nike has to play its cards very carefully here with Tiger. Since he’s taking a “break” from golf (oh he will still practice on some private courses that he likes) he could at any time offer a week long golf camp if he wanted to at say …….$1,000 a head and before you can say “I can’t get my putter up” they would be turning guys away and have to schedule several other camps.

Then there’s the How did you get away with it for so long? book deal (if someone hasn’t approached him yet I’d be amazed). You won’t have to worry about a Buick sponsorship (they’re owned by Obama now) and Tiger didn’t crash a Buick did he now? If you model Tag Hauer watches you don’t drive a frickin Buick now do you?

The only way to save the marriage is asking for forgiveness. First from God who loves us since we are still his children and then from Elin. Doesn’t mean she has to forget she can put an electric dog collar around his privates and anytime he gets aroused ZAP-P-P-P! If they divorce the kids suffer. Oh, they’ll be spoiled beyond belief and play both of them like fiddles.
Is that Buck Owens I hear in the background?
………and it looks like I got a Tiger by the balls.

I don’t see Nike dropping him since of all his sponsors they have the most to lose. Your are absolutely correct about the book, I can see Def Jam buying the movie rights so they can shoot another How To Be A Player movie and cast Tiger as the lead.

As far as saving his marriage (and this is merely my opinion) but if you have to offer your wife $5 million dollars and a renegotiation of the prenuptial that would pay up to an additional $55 million if she stays another 2 years, then that is a business arrangement and not a marriage. Doesn’t seem like there is much of a *marriage* to save.

I’ll agree the kids are going to suffer, but they will suffer regardless if Tiger and his wife split up or not. The kids will go through life with the world knowing that their dad couldn’t keep his putter on one green *so to speak*. Its a tricky situation all the way around.

    Thanks for the comment..

Thank you Liverdamage for making my point. While the guy in the video is poking fun at the situation, there are fans that really feel that way.
