So this was the scene at the draft this year when 2nd Lt. Caleb Campbell was selected by the Detroit Lions.
The Detroit Lions drafted Campbell on the word from the Army that he would be able to delay his service to pursue a career in the NFL, as a way to pump up recruits. The night before training camp is supposed to start, Campbell is told the Army had changed the rules, and Campbell had to report for duty. The Army apparently revised the policy based on the Navy and the Air Force freaking out about Campbell getting a special deal.
If it wasn’t bad enough that Campbell’s NFL dreams are being put on hold, he is reporting not to serve his country in the war but to become an asst. coach for Army’s football program??? Are you serious?? Talk about a kick in the crotch! You can’t play in the NFL, where you have earned a spot, especially playing for a school that receives little attention from scouts, but instead you have to report so you can be a coach? Anyone else other then me see a problem with this?
Hopefully Campbell will be able to realize not only his dream of being an officer in the military, but being able to play in the NFL as well.
