So I finally got to sit down and watch last weeks episode of Hard Knocks, and I gotta say, the first 5 minutes made me kinda sick to my stomach. Now before I go into details I am a die hard Cowboys fan. I have a major problem with the following statements.. I am paraphrasing because I already deleted the episode…
The episode starts with a stripped down Cowboys helmet, and the announcer starts out by saying “This is no oridinary football helmet, as they show someone assembling the helmet (face mask, chin strap, ect) the last image put on it is the Star on the side of the helmet, where it is followed by *This is a Dallas Cowboys helmet, *America’s Team, the most sacred team in all of sports* Ok stop right there.. that’s my problem..
America’s Team?? Did the Cowboys set up the American Idol hot line and ask for America to vote? I get the fact that the Cowboys are a one of the bigger franchises in all of sports, but come on America’s Team?? Can someone explain this one to me please? Now as far as the most sacred team in all of sports?? Just looking at it from a Championship stand point the Cowboys fail in comparison. If we were going to take a poll, I doubt very seriously the Cowboys would be placed above the Boston Celtics, or the Los Angeles Lakers. Lets not forget the Chicago Bulls. So lets not get ahead of ourselves by saying the cowboys are the most sacred sports franchise in all of sports.
Later in the episode Jerry *The Devil* Jones was addressing the team on the first day of camp and he continues going on about the Cowboys, and their greatness.. ect ect ect. It was mentioned with the moves Jerry Jones has made in the offseason that its a Superbowl or bust season. I hate to pull the emergency brake on this train heading to Tampa Bay (site of next years Superbowl) but the Cowboys have not won a playoff game in 12 years. Lets try to keep things in perspective, every year there are 32 teams in the NFL that feel they have a real shot at making the Superbowl. Its what every team has in their sights. I hope the Cowboys are not buying into all the hype that is surround them about being the NFC team in this years Superbowl. Lets face it, this team has 13 pro-bowlers coming back, actually 12 if you don’t count Roy Williams, since it took the death of Sean Taylor to add him to the pro-bowl roster last year. Does this team have a better chance then most teams in the NFC to make the Superbowl, Absolutely! Lets face it, on paper they have the best team in the NFC, but as the Redskins from a few years ago learned the game is played on the field, not on paper. We all remember the year and or years the Redskins have gone out and just spent stupid money on big name free agents only to finish just short of the playoffs.
As I said I love my Cowboys even if the devil does own them, but lets stop the America’s Team crap! Fans step away from Expedia, and hold off on reserving plane tickets, hotel rooms, and rental cars, and let the season play out. Hey around here last season we were all booking trips to Arizona after the Packers game, only to have our hearts broken by the Giants. Do I want to see my Cowboys make a trip to Tampa Bay this year.. Most Definitely!! It would be nice to be out in the streets of Dallas the night the Cowboys win a Superbowl. I have been able to celebrate a Championship in the streets back in Houston, during the Clutch City days! However, I am not going to buy into all the hype! Get out there and earn it, don’t expect because you we have Romo, Witten, T.O. and a handful of other pro-bowlers that the road to Tampa Bay will not have a few potholes along the way!

I like the Cowboys–but even the Pittsburgh Steelers -have a great shot at it–so yes I agree people get real–everyone has a shot

Well, the Cowboys have been America’s team for about 3 decades now. It’s not a new stigma for the Cowboys nor should everyone who is a true fan not to expect a Superbowl win this year.
All true fans want to believe “this is the year” every year or they are just skeptics of their teams talent. I can understand how Pirate fans can’t get excited about their teams because they haven’t done anything since the Roberto Clemete days. But for the most part every team has a chance at the beginning of every year. People are even starting to hype Ari-freaking-zona. Are you serious? But, again, they do have a chance.
America’s team is the Cowboys because of the Cheerleaders, not the players. The chearleaders are the people who traveled all over the place including overseas to see troops for the last 30 years, that is how they because America’s team. When all of the troops overseas wanted a piece of Americana, the Cowboys Cheerleaders were there, and that is how they became America’s team.

Well I know that they have been called America’s Team for several decades, I just never knew why. Did you know that most non Cowboy fans hate that tag being put on them?
Now as far a Superbowl this year, as I said, they have the best team in the NFC, but I feel its alittle to early for everyone to start putting them there. They have the talent, they have the desire, and they have the bad taste in their mouth from last year. Now can they put all that together? Thats the million dollar question!!!
GO COWBOYS!!

Actually, Steve, the Cowboys are called America’s Team because NFL Films gave them that nickname back in 1978. Obviously, it stuck. It doesn’t matter what non-Cowboys fans think. They’re a bunch of haters anyway.
The cheerleaders are a big part of the Cowboys mystique. They are great ambassadors for the team and the league.
As far as, the Super Bowl, every year some team is the favorite to win it all. This year it happens to be Dallas. Will it come true? We will see, but give the Cowboys players credit. They know they have their work cut out for them.

For the uninformed Cowboy’s fan (or possibly grafted in Oilers fanboy), one can read about the history of the title “America’s Team” here on wikipedia.org:

I love it, because I refuse to address the Cowboys as *America’s Team* I am a grafted in Oilers fan. *shakes head*
I understand that someone used this nickname in a NFL film way back in the day, and the name stuck but that doesn’t mean that because I voiced my opinion on the matter that my *Cowboys Fan Card* should be in question!!
Incase you missed the picture in the header, look again! ;)

You guys obviously didn’t get the memo. The Carolina panthers are now America’s team.
With all the in fighting going on between lefts and rights who better to represent America than the team throwing punches in practice?????
Damn,
Steve Smith for President….Go Panthers..
Cowboys lost all respect when T.O Cried, and Romo choked. but Romo, I can understand, his woman is HOT. LOL
just yankin yo chain Ick.
Cowboys look like they might win a pre-season game and maybe a couple of regular season games too… keep the hope bro.

One of the hardest things in life is to admit that your team sucks. That’s not to say that the Cowgirls won’t win the Super Bowl, because they might. So might about 10 of the other teams in the NFL (Not For Long at these prices). You can safely say that the rest of the teams are just fodder for the cannon (and, yes, Weedhopper, I include the Texans in that group). I was a huge Cowboy fan back in the day, but when they were deemed America’s Team by, as Dee points out, the NFL Films guru, it ticked me off. It’s one thing to have pride in your team, but to be arrogant about it is another. So, Weedhopper, keep on being straight about this. Let the others be the crushed ones if things don’t pan out for the ‘Girls. But even if they win the big one, rest assured they’ll still suck.

first of all you must be retarded, americas team has been the cowboys for quite a while. try since like 1960. you cant be a die hard dallas fan and think that they arnt americas team because even a redskin fan knows the dallas cowboy is americas team. get some common sense or find a new team. your a horrible fan and deserve to fall in a puddle of piss

@ Sum Dude,
First and foremost read the following line..
“Bob Ryan, the Vice President and editor-in-chief of NFL Films, coined this for the Cowboys in 1979″.
So this kinda takes the wind out of your sails for your 60′s theory..
2nd – Because I do not buy into the *Americas Team* hype that surrounds the Cowboys, that should not mean I should have to turn over my fan card.
If your the *redskins* fan you spoke of in your comment, enjoy you $100 Million Dollar loosing season
Thanks for the comment!

Since “sum dude” is such a loyal fan, perhaps Daniel Snyder can hook him up with some ducits to go back to school and learn something so he wouldn’t be so grammatically challenged. If he got a little education, he wouldn’t be so quick to show his ignorance of NFL history. One thing I dislike worse than an ignorant Dallas fan is an ignorant Washington fan.
